Malbec is a variety of purple grape used in making red wine. The grapes tend to have an inky dark color, robust tannins, and a particular plum-like flavour. Also, Malbec has been long known as one of the six grapes allowed in red Bordeaux blends. Plantings of Malbec are now found primarily in the Cahors area in south west France.
